Love your patchwork bags Stephanie!! I’ve been making one today, but couldn’t finish it as the labels got put away in the caravan by mistake. I need to get them out again in daylight.

I like the mix of fabrics you’ve used. ๐Ÿ˜€

They don’t look like beginners bags, Stephanie ๐Ÿ˜€ I think you’re being over critical of yourself – they’re lovely and I’m sure the eventual owners will like them.

I’ve tried out rounded corners sometimes too – it’s nice to make some variations and experiment.

I keep a running list of new pods and the ones that add bags to the tally, Krisaby. I log on to add a bag or two every few days and I update it then, using my own last entry as a marker. Unfortunately, as the list gets longer during the month it gets easier to add duplicates as I have to scroll up and down my “little list”. And for the total number, I try to remember to make a note of the month’s total from the website’s front page on the evening of the last day of the month. I forgot once and had to add up all the entries (hundreds of them) on a big piece of paper, and Offcuts made a note for me when I was on holiday at the end of April.

Here’s what I wrote back in December 2011
    Re: Impromptu handout

I have good news and I have bad news.

The bad news is that I turned up at the Park and Ride a few days ago and they wouldn’t let me bag their passengers. The chaps in the office wouldn’t even accept a bag or two for themselves. I had to contact the management, who are on holiday as it’s nearly Christmas & I couldn’t track down who I had to speak to via their website either. It’s an idea to use another time, maybe.

And the good news is that Masterclock and I bagged most of two housing estates in a nearby village. We trotted round, between the sleety showers, stuffing morsbags through letterboxes. We were a bit surprised to find that a few houses had no letter box, in the door, or on a post or a nearby wall. ๐Ÿ˜ฏ What does the postman do?

Another surprise was the houses where you lifted the flap over the slot in the door and a pungent pong of “fags” or “dog” pushed its way out and up your nostrils. ๐Ÿ˜• Yeurck!!

The first estate we did is well known locally for having a complicated layout – we think we found almost all of the houses, but I was amused to see that No.39 in one road was next door to and in line with No. 65 in another.

We were spotted by a few people who popped out of their houses to say “thank you”. I had polite refusals / handing back from 2 households who said they had enough bags thanks, and one lady came out in her socks and “yoo-hoo”ed at me til I came back to her – she wanted to know what it was all about. I gave her the quick explanation as time was getting on and we wanted to finish before dark. Maybe she’ll find the website – I hope so.

We came back with just a few bags – one I dropped and it got a bit muddy and there were a couple of very small ones that we’ll home separately. It took all afternoon, but we did get some exercise today. ๐Ÿ˜€ “

Plastic carrier bags are to be charged for in shops with more than 250 employees, unless the customer is buying “items from a long list of exemptions, including: uncooked fish, meat and poultry products, unwrapped blades and โ€œlive aquatic creatures in waterโ€.

Also included are flowers, bulbs, potatoes and prescription drugs.

The exemptions also apply to unwrapped food for human or animal consumption, such as chips and food sold in containers that could leak.

However, if even one non-exempt item is placed in the bag, cashiers must charge 5p.

The guidelines explain: โ€œFor example, you wouldnโ€™t charge for a bag containing an unwrapped blade and unwrapped loose seeds, but adding a box of cornflakes means youโ€™d have to charge.โ€

As comical as it sounds, the new charge could have serious consequences: retailers who fail to detect shoppers who need to pay for their plastic bags could face fines of up to ยฃ5,000 if they are caught by local authority inspectors.”

And what IS a plastic carrier bag, anyway? “It must be made of plastic, be unused, have handles and be 70 microns thick or less.”

Info above from The Independent http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/rules-on-5p-plastic-bags-likely-to-lead-to-arguments-at-the-checkout-10478570.html

The company seems to be able to choose which charity the 5p per bag levy goes to.

Marianne/ Marion said that she lives in a village in Northamptonshire where a group of women make morsbags.

Does anyone have an address to send bags to? I could make up a parcel and send some to the programme.

Sorry, one of us should have mentioned – you use cones with a cone stand or make up a substitute.

    One on ebay – http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SEWING-MACHINE-THREAD-SPOOL-STAND-DOUBLE-CONE-HOLDER-1000m-to-5000m-COTTON-/281418979898?hash=item4185e0da3a

We made a substitute out of a plastic drinks bottle(minus the cap) with a hole cut in the side to put the cone in. You lead the thread out of the top of the bottle – it stops the cone jumping around and takes the thread higher up.

The traditional way of using a cone is to put it in a heavy jug or beer mug behind the machine, so it can’t roll around and just thread the machine normally.

We still have some of the beige thread Offcuts gave us – donated, I believe. Otherwise, often use cones – 5000 meters are even better value than 1000 and cost only a little more. I like polycotton. Don’t know what 120 count means – do you think it’s like best quality sheets that give the thread count (threads per inch, possibly?)

I’ll be following to learn more too!

Thanks for posting the pictures of your first bags Stefanie! ๐Ÿ˜€ I’m with Agwen, I like them all – you’re obviously an experienced needle-person, but I like the kittens and the way you’ve placed the paws and little tail overlapping the tartan. Super! ๐Ÿ˜€

I also pick out no 6 – the one with inset strips of turquoise as well – nice!
