Thanks Sazzie! Merry Christmas to you, and morsbaggers everywhere! π
I’ve just had to put the two sewing machines that live on the dining table away, for some reason or other – but I’m sure they’ll be out again when Christmas is over.
Happy sewing in 2015!
Thanks for posting about the Cinderella hand-out Offcuts! I’d been wondering how it went. I agree with Krisaby, the glass slippers applique is absolutely magical!!
Welcome to morsbags Carise!! π
December 22, 2014 at 8:41 pm in reply to: 200 morsbags used for festive food parcels in Loughborough #3425That’s marvellous, Offcuts! Food banks do a great job for people in difficulties, and I love the photos, particularly the one of all the filled bags lined up so colourfully! I too hope the volunteers got a bag each too. I’m sure that if they missed out this time they will be able to have one in the New Year.
Hello Teaboy! It looks like an interesting trip π You did well to give those bags away so far from home! Hope you had a great time π
Thanks for your postal address. I’ve had a count up and have 64 square labels with me. I’ll hope to post them tomorrow, all being well. I hope that’s enough, but it’s what I have! Maybe contact P&J on admin@morsbags.com to ask about the labels you prefer?
And here I am, back again! As I’m a moderator I can see your email address, Lady delapre. I’ve emailed you. π
Ah, well we’re in the “post-Label-Gate” period! π
I’ve grown to love the square labels, but some people made it clear that they didn’t, so Pol & Joe ordered some more of the original longer shaped labels so that morsbaggers could have a choice of format. The longer ones are the “retro” ones that are available now. I think the square ones may be out of stock at the moment. How many did you want? I have some that I could part with, but I don’t want to ask you to post contact details on here and we can’t do private messages with the new website. Will consider how to get them to you….
I’ve just had a look at the Lucia Project – brought a tear to my eye.
I think that if you decide to go with morsbags instead of backpacks I’d possibly scale up the size of the morsbag a tad – maybe make it wider and a bit longer, and if you do that, reduce the length of the handles a little bit so it doesn’t drag on the ground if you’re not very tall. Or make the bags with a gusset – a strip of fabric between the two bag sides so that it’s deeper to get more stuff in.
We’ve made fairly waterproof bags out of material intended for making hot air balloons. Ivybags bought a big lot of offcuts from Cameron Balloons in Bristol and kindly passed some on to us. The fabric is very fine but strong and just about waterproof. Some of those bags had integrated pockets or sachets to fold them away into, like Onyabags.
I’ve tried shower curtains and they were OK, but difficult to sew, especially the final bit of the french seams as the fabric is slipper and “creeps” as you sew.
I’ve sometimes made bags out of duvet covers where I’ve kept the poppers at the top of the bag but you have to be careful when cutting out the fabric so that the poppers don’t occur in the side seams or where you want to bring the handles up, so they’re a bit tricky.
I’m not very good at inserting zips, but I see no reason why you wouldn’t be able to. I try to get the stitching close to the edge of the bag when sewing the handles up into position and you’d need to allow room for the zip and not get too close to the edge.
We’ve made quite a lot of bags with pockets – they’re a good way of brightening up dull bags with a scrap of nice material. I like to put the morsbags label on the pocket before I sew it onto the bag, but don’t always do that.
Giving them out to homeless people with useful things in is a great “good cause”! π
LOL! Thanks for asking Krisaby, but we don’t know how much washing up will be piled up when we eventually get home. As you may have gathered, we’re STILL not there! Got sidetracked by some business & haven’t been home since early /mid October! π Someone asked me how my garden is, and that twisted the knife, as I just don’t know how it is, how many brambles have regrown and how high the grass has got!!
Have the builders next door finally finished (after almost 3 years) and moved on? Have the bunnies borrowed a JCB from the builders and made a replica of the Channel Tunnel under the fence? Have any more of my garden walls collapsed? (One did a few days before we left & needs rebuilding). These and similar questions are on my mind….Having a specialised cutter-outer is an advantage! There are so many talents needed, and different roles to be found in a pod. I hope the pop-up crafts shop is a success, and the handing out and sewing there. π
We were out for a trip today and passed a library with interesting window displays and an invitation to organise your own display there “to brighten up our windows”. I thought “I know how to do that”, but it’s quite a distance away and I’m not sure if I could make the journey to arrange it, then set up the display, then go (probably more than once) to sew in the library.
Sorry Cathapple, hihgjacking your thread……We had a great time, thank you all, the weather was mostly amazingly good (24-27 degrees) and we did sightseeing, country walks and relaxing.
I’d be interested to read your mum’s book, Offcuts. I wonder how much Sorrento has changed since she wrote it. I took my “tall and handsome man” with me!! πWe also managed a visit to see our granddaughter who is growing up soooo fast! We’ll be babysitting her for a day in a few weeks so her mum can go to a meeting at her workplace, in preparation for returning to work.
That does look like fun! The ladies holding up finished bags are absolutely thrilled with them, and with the fun of making them! π
(Also, great cake! = ***** 5 stars! )Lovely! Sounds like you’ve got a super group developing, Cathapple! π
Aaah, they’re gorgeous! :-))
