Our local Freegle group (like Freecycle…) sent out its first newsletter today and in it I read about Plastic Free July. I wish it had arrived a month ago!

It seems a bit limp to just do it for the three days left of this July, so I thought I’d see if I can manage a plastic free August. The place I think I’ll have trouble is buying supermarket fruit & veg as it’s either prepacked in a plastic bags, or your expected to put your dozen carrots in a different plastic bag to be weighed.

    How about you?

The supermarkets will weigh fruit and veg without a plastic bag. I think there is a plastic free july group on Facebook, Apparently it only takes 21 days to get into a new habit! There are more fruit and veg being packaged in cardboard now as well. Ever the optimist me!

In the pub for choir practice last night my lime and soda needed mixing. The choice was between a straw and a plastic swizzle stick. I opted for the stick and popped it back in the container when no-one was looking! Now I feel guilty – should have stirred it with my pen. Oh well!.

I realise that supermarkets will weigh stuff without a bag. Ok when you’ve got a few bananas, not so good when your cherries are falling all over the place, or you have a lot of carrots getting separated.

Do you remember when we made bags for weighing fruit and veg out of netting like net curtains? I think it came from skopos. Grumpy does the food shopping and I can’t remember when he last brought home any fruit or veg in plastic bags. He wouldn’t dare! Our favourite greengrocer only uses paper bags. He said people have demanded them and he sleeps better at night!

Oh, I like this idea, I have some old net curtains so I will make one and try it.
